What is IPv6 and why turn it on?

IPv6 is the newer version of internet addresses. With IPv6 on, some connections become faster and more stable. Most mobile carriers support it, but on many phones it is turned off by default. You only need to change one setting.

Before you start

  1. Turn on mobile data (internet from your SIM card).
  2. This guide is for mobile data. IPv6 on Wi‑Fi depends on your router and internet provider.
  3. Nothing will break. You can always switch back to the previous setting.

Choose your phone

Menu names are a little different on each brand. Pick yours:

1 Step 1 of 8

Open Settings, then Connections

Open the Settings app and tap Connections.

2 Step 2 of 8

Tap Mobile networks

Scroll down a little and tap Mobile networks.

3 Step 3 of 8

Tap Access Point Names

Tap Access Point Names. If you have two SIM cards, pick the SIM you use for internet from the tabs at the top.

4 Step 4 of 8

Open your active APN

You will see a list. Tap the name of the item that is selected (the one with the filled circle).

5 Step 5 of 8

Set “APN protocol” to IPv4/IPv6

Scroll down, tap APN protocol and choose IPv4/IPv6.

6 Step 6 of 8

Set “APN roaming protocol” to IPv4/IPv6

Right below it, tap APN roaming protocol and choose IPv4/IPv6 too.

7 Step 7 of 8

Save the changes

Tap the ⋮ button (three dots) at the top, then tap Save. On some Xiaomi phones, tap ✓ at the top or More at the bottom instead.

8 Step 8 of 8

Restart the connection

Swipe down from the top of the screen. Turn Airplane mode on, wait 5 seconds, then turn it off again. That’s it — IPv6 is on!

Common problems and questions

The APN settings are gray and I can’t change them
Your carrier has locked this APN. Tap + at the top of the Access Point Names list to add a new one. Copy the same Name and APN values, set both protocols to IPv4/IPv6, save it and select it.
I can’t find “APN protocol”
Scroll down to the end of the Edit access point page — it is usually near the bottom. If it is still missing, your phone or carrier does not allow changing it. Contact your carrier.
My internet stopped working after the change
Go back to the same page and set both protocols to IPv4 again, or tap ⋮ on the Access Point Names list and choose Reset to default. Your carrier may not support IPv6 yet.
I have two SIM cards. Which one should I change?
Change the SIM card that you use for mobile internet. You can do the same steps for the other SIM too.
Does this also turn on IPv6 for Wi‑Fi?
No. On Wi‑Fi, IPv6 depends on your modem/router and your internet provider, not on your phone.
Is this safe?
Yes. You only change how your phone talks to your carrier. Nothing is deleted, and you can change it back at any time.
